In early 2025, we were building a SaaS product with a small team of three. We'd been doing serious R&D — new algorithms, failed experiments, documented uncertainty. Classic SR&ED territory. But we had no idea.
A friend mentioned SR&ED in passing. We spent two weekends reading CRA documentation, tried three different online calculators (all US-focused or broken), and eventually paid a consultant $12,000 to file a claim worth $42,000. The consultant did good work — but we kept thinking: 80% of this was documentation and drafting. Why wasn't there a tool for it?
We started talking to other founders. Same story, over and over. Either they'd missed SR&ED entirely, or they were paying 20–30% to consultants, or they'd tried to file themselves and given up in the complexity. The closest competitor had just been acquired by Deloitte and was moving upmarket.
